There are two parts to gaining your Yachtmaster Ocean certificate. The shorebased element covers astro navigation, worldwide meteorology and passage planning, and unravels the mysteries of the sextant.
The practical element is an assessment of sextant sights that you must take on an Ocean passage followed by an Oral examination covering ocean passage making including planning, navigation, worldwide meteorology, crew management, yacht preparation, maintenance and repairs. It is not essential to have taken the shorebased course to gain an Ocean Yachtmaster certificate but it is highly advisable as it provides you with the grounding to take sights successfully on your Ocean passage.
If you hold the shorebased certificate you will not sit the written exam as part of the overall Ocean Yachtmaster assessment.
